Treasures From The Sand

Under the northwest rowhouse at Michilimackinac is an underground exhibit gallery presenting the story of archaeological investigations at Michilimackinac every summer since 1959.  The permanent exhibit incorporates archaeological ruins, audio visual exhibits, vitrines of artifacts, and period settings help to interpret the story and process of archaeology at Michilimackinac.  The gallery exhibits some of the very best archaeological artifacts discovered at Michilimackinac.  The gallery is climate controlled for artifact protection and visitor comfort.

Priest's Cellar Period Setting

The original location for the priest's cellar was turned into a period setting that can be viewed at cellar floor level.  Looking up through the cellar door the priest's house can be seen.  The period setting shows how cellars at Michilimackinac were used as cool storage locations for food or storage of trade goods.

Original French Well

The original French well remains is exhibited behind glass in the tunnel.  Even though the fort was right next to an enormous source of fresh water (Lake Michigan), the French still excavated this well for the fort just in case  Michilimackinac was ever under attack and it would be dangerous to go outside the palisade to fetch water.

Next to the well ruin is an exhibit case with artifacts found in the well.  The artifacts include the only telescope and pewter plate found at Michilimackinac.

Mysteries and World of Ceramics

Two of the exhibit cases in the tunnel display "Mysterious Artifacts" and "A World of Ceramics" found at Michilimackinac.

The mysterious artifacts include unidentifiable objects or puzzling artifacts why they were found at Michilimackinac.

The ceramics exhibit case shows the wide variety of French, British, and German ceramic types found at Michilimackinac.
