Deed to Mackinac Island

On May 12, 1781 in a formal ceremony in a maple grove below Fort Mackinac, Ojibway chiefs Kitchie Negon, Pouanas, Koupe and Magousseihigan agreed to sell Mackinac Island to Great Britain for a dozen canoes loaded with goods and merchandise valued at 5,000 pounds. Lieutenant Governor Patrick Sinclair drafted a formal deed. In 1796 this copy of the original was made when the island was turned over to the United States. (1983.281.1)

Gift of Martin and Patricia Jahn.
