American Fur Company Store

This is the site where Alexis St. Martin was accidently shot in the stomach on 6 June 1822.  The American Fur Company Store (previously known as the Beaumont Memorial) was built in 1954 by the Michigan State Medical Society to commemorate the pioneer research in digestion of William Beaumont, M.D.

Site Interpreters

Today interpreters at the American Fur Company Store explain the imporatnce of the site as a memorial to Dr. William Beaumont's medical research, in addition to interpreting to visitors the role of the American Fur Company Store on Mackinac Island and its importance to the local economy.

Period Setting

The store has a working period setting combined with interactive exhibits and a museum case with archaeological artifacts to help interpret, the shooting of Alexis St. Martin, medical research by Dr. Beaumont from St. Martin's treatment,  and workings of an 1820s island business.
