Moviemaking at Mackinac Vignette

Mackinac History, A Continuing Series of Illustrated Vignettes

Vol IV Leaflet #2   2008

“Moviemaking at Mackinac. A lighthearted ‘aqua musical.’ A heavy drama with a strong anti-communism message. A romantic fantasy that has risen to the level of a cult classic. And a Technicolor travelogue as enticing to listen to as it is to watch. These are just a few of the movies that have used Mackinac Island as a backdrop since the advent of the filmmaking industry.”

This vignette details some of the movies filmed on Mackinac Island including:

One reel short subject travelogues filmed by James A FitzPatrick under the aegis of MGM.

This Time for Keeps, starring Esther Williams (1946)

The Crowning Experience, Decision at Midnight, and Voice of the Hurricane all produced by Moral Re-Armament (MRA movies)

Somewhere in Time, starring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve (1979)

Brother’s Keeper / Matchbox Circus Train, writer-director-producer Chanan Beizer (1993)
